Cataract Surgery with Premium Intraocular Lens Options

As leaders in the field, our surgeons use the latest technologies to ensure you receive the most advanced and effective cataract treatment available. The best lenses will be recommended based on your vision requirements.

Premium intraocular lenses include:

  • Toric IOLs are ideal for correcting astigmatism, ensuring sharp, clear vision.
  • Presbyopia correcting IOLs (PCIOLs) – there are several types of PCIOLs.
  • Extended depth of focus (EDOF) – these sharpen vision at distance and elongate the focus to include intermediate vision but only modestly improve near vision. This means that glasses may be required for near vision.
  • Multifocal IOLs (MFIOLs) – these IOLs provide distance, intermediate and near vision via multiple zones of lens power in a single IOL. Whilst they provide better spectacle independence than EDOF IOLs, they can affect contrast sensitivity and increase visual disturbances such as glare and haloes especially at night.
  • Accommodative IOLs – the only FDA-approved accommodative IOLs are the Crystalens and Trulign™ Toric. These are designed to simulate the natural focusing mechanism of the eye by changing power according to focusing distance. However, these are not in widespread use and may have inconsistent outcomes in terms of clear vision at all distances.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts is a common eye condition where the eye’s clear lens becomes cloudy, impairing vision. The lens, located behind the iris, focuses light on the retina for clear sight. Aging or other factors can cause proteins in the lens to clump, creating cloudy areas that affect vision.

Symptoms of cataracts include:

  • blurred vision
  • trouble seeing at night
  • sensitivity to light
  • halos around lights

While cataracts are often age-related, factors like diabetes, eye injuries, or UV exposure can also play a role. Thankfully, advanced surgical techniques used by Tauranga Eye Specialists can effectively treat cataracts, restoring clear vision and improving quality of life.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a widely practised and highly effective procedure designed to treat cataracts by removing the eye’s clouded lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The operation typically takes less than 30 minutes and is performed under topical or local anaesthesia.

The process involves making a small incision in the eye and inserting the IOL to restore clear vision. Modern advancements in cataract surgery allow for faster recovery times and customisable lens options, which can address additional vision issues such as astigmatism or presbyopia. Our team use the Verion digital marking/alignment system to precisely position a toric lens at the time of surgery

Non Surgical Treatment of Cataracts

In the early stages of cataract development, a prescription for glasses or contact lenses may improve vision. However, if cataracts significantly impair vision and impact quality of life, surgery may be recommended.
