What is Oculoplastic and Lacrimal Surgery?

Oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery focuses on the delicate structures surrounding the eyes, including the eyelids, tear ducts, and orbit (the bony cavity housing the eye). This specialised field addresses functional and cosmetic concerns, such as repairing droopy eyelids (ptosis), removing excess upper eyelid skin (dermatochalsis), removing eyelid tumours, or reconstructing the orbital area after trauma.

Lacrimal surgery, a subset of oculoplastic surgery, treats tear duct disorders to restore proper tear drainage and alleviate chronic watering or infections (epiphora). These procedures require precision and a deep understanding of the eye’s anatomy, ensuring optimal outcomes while preserving vision and overall eye health.

When is Oculoplastic Surgery Needed?

Oculoplastic surgery may be recommended for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Age-related changes to the eyelids, such as drooping or sagging skin that affects vision
  • Injuries or trauma to the eye area that require reconstruction
  • Congenital conditions affecting the eyelids or orbit, such as ptosis in children
  • Cosmetic concerns, such as excess eyelid skin or bags under the eyes

In addition to these common indications, oculoplastic surgery can also address certain medical conditions like thyroid eye disease and Graves’ disease. Our team of skilled surgeons will work closely with you to determine the best treatment.
