Dry Eye Clinic

Struggling with Dry, Irritated Eyes?

Get lasting relief with ophthalmologist-led diagnosis and treatment in Tauranga.

Dry eye syndrome is a condition where the eyes don’t produce enough tears or the tears are of poor quality, leading to inadequate lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. Blepharitis is a common cause of dry eye, causing eyelid inflammation that leads to redness, itching, and disruption of the tear film.

Common symptoms include:

  • Burning, stinging, or gritty sensation
  • Watery or red eyes
  • Fluctuating or blurry vision
  • Eye fatigue or sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

Dry Eyes Deserve a Specialist’s Eye

If you experience burning, watering, gritty, or blurry eyes, then you’re not alone. Dry Eye Syndrome affects millions and is often caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), the most common form of the condition.

At Tauranga Eye Specialists, we’re proud to offer TearStim IRPL®, an advanced, non-invasive therapy clinically proven to provide lasting relief by treating the root cause of dry eyes, not just the symptoms.

Unlike conventional therapies, TearStim IRPL uses regulated light pulses to stimulate the parasympathetic nerve, which helps regenerate gland function, improve lipid quality, and restore a healthy tear film.

Our Advanced Dry Eye Treatment

TearStim IRPL Therapy

While artificial tears treat symptoms, IRPL targets the root cause, restoring the function of your meibomian glands and helping break the inflammatory cycle behind chronic dry eye.

TearStim IRPL is a leading-edge, French-designed technology that safely stimulates the meibomian glands in your eyelids to restart healthy tear production and restore your natural tear film.

What sets IRPL apart:

  • Non-invasive, quick, and completely painless
  • Stimulates gland regeneration through precise light pulses
  • Reduces inflammation and stabilises the tear film’s lipid layer
  • Typically delivered in a series of 3–4 sessions over several weeks

What to Expect During your Treatment

Ophthalmologist-led care

Your condition is diagnosed by a medical eye specialist, ideal for patients with complex or persistent symptoms.

Following an initial assessment, treatment is delivered by a trained technician who administers IRPL, which follows your ophthalmologist’s personalised plan for you.

Treatment on the day

  • You’ll relax in a treatment chair while several different treatments are delivered.
  • For the IRPL treatment, you will wear protective eye goggles. A cooling gel will be applied to the skin on your lower eyelids, and gentle light pulses will be administered to the eyelids.
  • There’s no downtime needed, and you can return to your normal day straight after.
