What is Uveitis?
Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea (the middle layer of the eye), which can cause pain, redness, light sensitivity, and even vision loss. It requires expert diagnosis and treatment to manage and protect your sight.
Symptoms may include:
- Eye redness
- Eye pain
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
- Floaters
These symptoms can develop rapidly or gradually, affecting one or both eyes. It is essential to seek prompt medical evaluation if you experience these signs, as early diagnosis and treatment are critical to preventing potential vision loss.
Types of Uveitis
Each type of uveitis presents unique challenges and requires tailored treatment to manage symptoms and prevent complications effectively. Uveitis can be classified into several types based on the part of the uvea affected:
The most common form, this affects the front part of the uveal tract, known as the iris. Symptoms often include redness, pain, and sensitivity to light.
This type occurs in the middle section of the eye, primarily affecting the vitreous, the gel-like substance inside the eye. Blurry vision and floaters are typical symptoms.
Affecting the back portion of the eye, this form involves the retina and choroid. If left untreated, it can lead to significant vision impairment.
Panuveitis is inflammation that affects all layers of the uveal tract (iris, ciliary body and the choroid). It can severely affect vision and requires immediate medical attention.
Treatment Options for Uveitis
Our approach to managing uveitis includes developing a tailored plan to target its cause, reduce inflammation, and preserve your vision.
Treatment plans are typically customised based on the severity, location, and source of the condition. Treatment options include:
Anti-inflammatory medications, such as prednisone, can be administered as eye drops, oral tablets, or injections, depending on the severity of the inflammation.
For chronic or severe cases, immunosuppressive drugs, such as methotrexate or biologic therapies, may be prescribed to control the immune response and prevent flare-ups.
If an infection is identified as the cause of uveitis, specific antimicrobial or antiviral treatments are necessary to address the underlying pathogen.
These medications dilate the pupil, reducing pain and preventing complications such as synechiae (adhesions between the iris and lens).
For cases that do not respond to medication or in situations involving severe complications, such as cataracts or glaucoma, surgical procedures may be required to preserve vision.
