Meet Dr Mark Fajgenbaum
About Dr Fajgenbaum
Dr. Fajgenbaum is an experienced, high-volume cataract surgeon, who also enjoys managing complex cataract cases referred by his colleagues, such as cataracts occurring in the context of trauma or a prior complex surgical history. He has sub-specialty training and interest in vitreoretinal surgery and medical retinal conditions, including the management of retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinal vein occlusions (RVO), and diabetic retinopathy.
In Dr. Fajgenbaum’s areas of clinical and surgical interest, he regularly manages and operates upon patients who are in the greatest visual need from potentially blinding eye problems. These include retinal detachment and severe end-stage diabetic eye disease, among others. It is a privilege to be able to intervene in such cases. It is rewarding on a personal level when he can help his patients live their best life.
Dr. Fajgenbaum is the clinical lead for uveitis (ocular inflammation) at Tauranga Eye Specialists. Mark’s medical training began at Edinburgh University School of Medicine in Scotland. Upon graduation, he was accepted into the competitive 7-year UK ophthalmology training program based in London, England. There he trained at leading eye centres including Moorfields Eye Hospital, King’s College Hospital, St. George’s Hospital, and St Thomas Hospital. He is registered by the UK General Medical Council as a specialist ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in medical and surgical retina.
Dr. Fajgenbaum moved to New Zealand with his family in 2018, having been tempted by the beauty of Aotearoa while on holiday some years prior.
When he is not treating patients he enjoys family time with his wife Lisa and son Hugo. He also enjoys the camaraderie of regular social tennis at the Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club.
